Foreign Policy’s Power Issue Is Only 10 Percent Women

The current edition of Foreign Policy magazine is “The Power Issue,” and includes a map of the 500 most powerful individuals on the planet. Of them, only 10 percent are women. In a blistering essay in the magazine, David Rothkopf argues that the persistent paucity of women on such lists reflects the reality of worldwide gender oppression, which he calls “civilization’s greatest shame.” We’re talking, he writes, “about nothing less than an epoch-long war on a people here, an effort to hold back the economic—and social—progress of the majority of humanity. So how come the tough guys of the foreign-policy community continue to denigrate this as a ‘soft’ issue, one of secondary importance at best?”
